The outer fabric is 70/2 gabardine. Produced in a factory with over 100 years of history, it is a rare, high-quality, high-density gabardine, said to be rare even in the world.
I remember that vintage Burberry coats were made with thread counts 70 to 72. This coat is made with thread count 70, which means that the thread used is the same or slightly thicker.
The raw material is Egyptian extra-long staple GIZA cotton. It has a beautiful luster that only extra-long staple cotton can produce. By using two-ply yarn, we have significantly improved both color development and durability. The fabrics used at TAKE&SONS are almost without exception high density. High density means that more raw materials are used, which naturally increases the price. This gabardine is no exception.
『THE LEGEND OF GABARDINE』
No sizing is used when warping the warp threads, and the fabric is woven on a specially set up old-fashioned loom without applying unnecessary tension to the threads. This attention to detail results in a supple and smooth gabardine that, despite being 100% cotton, can withstand light rain without any problems.
A masterpiece material created by the artisan’s skills known as “THE LEGEND OF GABARDINE.”
For the lining, we chose a ripstop batik pattern from TAKE&SONS. (The pattern is subject to change.) This is a pattern that mimics plants and mountain fish that grow naturally in mountain streams. The motifs are intentionally simplified and hand-painted in an uneven pattern. The “bleeding” seen in traditional batik is added to certain areas to create a mosaic-like effect, creating a complex pattern.
When it comes to the lining of a coat, you might typically imagine it as being quilted with padding, but for this piece we’ve stuck to a single layer of cotton. It’s necessary to ensure warmth and volume, and in that respect using a single layer of cotton fabric is extremely difficult. That’s why we turned to a heavy, double-woven cotton fabric. To add warmth, we’ve brushed it and then napped it to curl the pile. (Napping is a processing technique used on woolen clothing worn by hunters and shepherds in medieval Europe. By brushing the surface of the fabric and curling the pile, it was developed for its practicality, as scratches caused by catching on branches or other objects are less noticeable.) We hope it gives you the impression of a soft blanket.
The liner fabric is warm, supple, and soft, but it’s actually a fairly heavy material, so it does have some weight. However, when you wear it with a coat, the feeling can only be described as “light.”TAKE&SONS clothes tend to be heavy. This is simply because I seek a masculine, heavy feel in my clothes. That’s why I strive to create clothes that are light to wear. Let me briefly explain the principle behind this. I believe it makes sense to carry heavy objects over your head. This is because the weight passes through the spine, which is at the center of the body. My design theory seeks to achieve the same thing with clothing. I define the area centered around the seventh cervical vertebra as the “fit zone,” and I aim to place clothes precisely in this zone. In doing so, I create a “light feel” by designing the shoulders to float slightly above the body.
The waist belt with the D-ring hanging from it has a buckle wrapped in cowhide. (The buckles on the sleeve belts are also wrapped in cowhide.) The buttons are natural nut buttons carved from coconuts. Every time you touch the buttons, the oils from your fingers will transfer to them, giving them a glossy finish. These auxiliary materials are also designed to age well.
